A FAIRTRADE PARISH

Follow this link to the Universalis website for readings and prayers for the day

This year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lent Fast Day, CAFOD is inviting us to give it up! - not only for Fast Day itself but across the whole of Lent.

Whatever you give up this Lent - biscuits, wine, magazines, a meal - it can be transformed into lasting change for a child, a family, even a whole community in the developing world. Special themed envelopes are available to help you think about what you can give up and how it can help.

It's so simple: Give something up for Lent and give the money you save to CAFOD. To find out more click here>>

For this year's Fairtrade Fortnight, the Fairtrade Foundation asked the nation to join in The Big Swap. For two whole weeks they asked you to swap your usual st
uff for Fairtrade stuff. Your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual cotton socks for Fairtrade cotton socks, and your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa. Although Fairtrade Fortnight has ended for this year, you can continue to use your wallet to make a stand.

FOR THE PEOPLE OF HAITI

At this time of darkness for the people of Haiti
We remember all those who have died in the earthquake,
And the thousands who are injured, homeless or afraid.

God in your love and compassion, you are with us always.

You understand the devastation of bereavement,
May your spirit comfort those who mourn.

God, in your love and compassion, you are with us always.

You are a light that shines in the darkest times,
Guide, support and strengthen all those in need.

God in your love and compassion, You are with us always.

We ask this in the name of Christ your son,
Who became flesh and lived among us.
Amen.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Our grateful thanks to all parishioners for their most generous offerings.
So far £3,995.60 has been raised.

AFTER MASS REFRESHMENTS

Fairtrade tea and coffee is served after 10am and 11.30am Mass at St Thomas'.
After the 10am Mass we get a lot of families and the children love it. After 11.30am Mass the group is older - a lot of people who like to linger and catch up with friends, especially people living alone.

For the past 12 months, our Fairtrade tea and coffee has been provided to us by Waitrose, Buckhurst Hill in support of our Fairtrade parish status. Thanks to Waitrose and the generosity of all of you who join us for tea/coffee on Sundays, we have been able to donate £400 to charity last year.

Come and join us for a cuppa and a chat this Sunday. YOU ARE SUPPORTING A GOOD CAUSE WHEN YOU DO!

If you would like to join the rota for serving Fairtrade tea and coffee after 10am or 11.30am Mass, please contact Pat Bell, via the Parish Office. It's a great way to meet people if you are new to the parish.

Any Christian community tries to live out the commandment of Christ to love God and one's neighbour as thyself. Both aspects are inseparable and support for CAFOD enables us to help those in great need.

A recent estimate indicates that we throw away enough food to feed the starving in the whole of Africa. We urge all to review their lifestyle and the effects that a secular and consumerist society have had upon our existence.
Live simply so that others may simply live!
